Our speaker is KARIN OLDS, M.D., stroke medical director for Saint Luke's Marion Bloch Neuroscience Institute. She oversees a team of stroke experts who treated more than 1,800 patients in 2015–that’s about one every five hours.

She will discuss Brain: Guide to Recognition and Treatment of Stroke. She will

  • describe the latest treatment options for patients with high acuity strokes
  • discuss the time critical nature of stroke and the importance of prompt treatment
  • define common symptoms of stroke
  • suggest one clinical neurologic test used in the diagnosis and treatment of stroke
  • relay a common objective and subjective symptom of a patient having a stroke with a case study

Our location this year is 2016 MAIN, Kansas City, Missouri.  This facility hosts any number and type of events, and showcases the artwork by Seedco Studies out of Lawrence, KS. It is directly on the streetcar line. There is a back entrance where parking is located off Baltimore Avenue.

Dr. Olds knew she wanted to be a physician as far back as kindergarten. She actually began her health care career as a neuroscience nurse at Saint Luke’s back in 1993. She was part of one of the first ever “stroke units”– a nursing floor dedicated solely to the treatment of stroke patients.

She later went to medical school at the University of Kansas and completed her neurology residency at University of Alabama-Birmingham. She rejoined Saint Luke’s in 2006 and is board certified in vascular/stroke neurology. In addition to her work as stroke medical director, Dr. Olds also sees general neurology patients in clinic.

Outside of work, Dr. Olds enjoys time with her family, traveling, and gardening.
